Tahoe City Kayak Lives!

Tahoe City Kayak continues to receive extensive community support in the wake of the July 5 arson fire that burned the shop down.

The fundraising event last Saturday at Sierra Vista raised $1,650 from cover charges, raffle tickets and T-shirt sales, said Kat Terrey, head guide with Tahoe City Kayak. Roughly 120 people showed up to groove to tunes by local bands Rusty Strings and Harm’s Way, taking breaks only to raffle off prizes from ski boat rentals to chiropractic sessions to savings bonds provided by local businesses.

Andy Laughlin, the owner of Tahoe City Kayak, lists off clichés about doors opening and opportunities in crisis as he reiterated his gratitude to the North Shore community.

“Our continued success will depend on a strong August and September,” said Laughlin. “If we do as well or better than previous years we’ll make it. Thanks to the continued support of the community and excellent opportunities.”

Additionally, the shop made their debut appearance on North Lake Boulevard between Porter’s and Fiamma last week. They are completely moved out of their old space and now rent boats at their new beach location behind Safeway.

Being a land-locked kayak shop was difficult, said Laughlin, and their new retail and rental spaces enhance both convenience and visibility for customers and employees alike.

Their creative new T-shirts express the general sentiment of Tahoe City Kayak: “You can burn us but you can’t sink us.”
